How do I set up a Gmail account? Most people have at least one email address. Email has simplified communication in a number of ways, allowing people to communicate with each other for free regardless of distance or time zone. There are many email service providers. Gmail is one of these. Gmail is Google's free mail service. Gmail takes the features of Google, which is the largest search engine, and builds it in to the email, so you can do searches on the web and through your emails. Gmail also has a very large storage inbox, with 2,600 megabytes of storage, which is increased every day. You can keep all your important messages, files and pictures forever, use search to find anything you're looking for, and make sense of it all with a new way of viewing messages as part of conversations.
One reason Gmail has become popular is because there are no pop-ups or banner ads in Gmail, just small text ads. (Because it is a free service, it relies on ads such as these). Gmail tries to use ads that are relevant to your messages. Gmail also features instant messaging, as many other service providers do as well. Instant messaging allows users to communicate with friends on their messaging list, sort of like email, except it occurs in real time, allowing users to talk to each other on instant messenger over the computer by typing messages back and forth.
