How do I set up a Gmail account?

Most people have at least one email address. Email has simplified communication in a number of ways, allowing people to communicate with each other for free regardless of distance or time zone.

There are many email service providers. Gmail is one of these. Gmail is Google's free mail service. Gmail takes the features of Google, which is the largest search engine, and builds it in to the email, so you can do searches on the web and through your emails. Gmail also has a very large storage inbox, with 2,600 megabytes of storage, which is increased every day. You can keep all your important messages, files and pictures forever, use search to find anything you're looking for, and make sense of it all with a new way of viewing messages as part of conversations.

One reason Gmail has become popular is because there are no pop-ups or banner ads in Gmail, just small text ads. (Because it is a free service, it relies on ads such as these). Gmail tries to use ads that are relevant to your messages.

Gmail also features instant messaging, as many other service providers do as well. Instant messaging allows users to communicate with friends on their messaging list, sort of like email, except it occurs in real time, allowing users to talk to each other on instant messenger over the computer by typing messages back and forth.

How do I set up a Gmail account?
If you would like to set up a Gmail account of your own, you can do so by going to the gmail webpage, www.mail.google.com, and clicking on "sign up." From there, you will fill in a series of information, including:
1. Your name and login information. This first section will have you fill in your first and last name, gender, and then a username and password. Your login name will be your new email address. Many people choose their name, or a variation of it. It's important to remember, however, that many of these names will be taken, so you can add variation to it, such as numbers that mean something. Keep trying until you get the one you want.
2. Create your password. Once you've entered in your new login name, you can then create your password. This should be something that is not easily guessed. Hackers can easily hack into accounts when your password is a birth date or consecutive numbers, like1234. Avoid using your name, birth date, or other identifiable numbers. Instead, choose a combination of letters, dates, or words that will be easy for you to remember but difficult for anyone to guess.
3. Next, choose a security question. If you happen to forget your password, you can send an email to the administrator and have them retrieve it for you. A drop down list will give you a number of options for questions.
4. Next, you will verify your registration by filling in a series of letters and numbers, which helps to prevent automated registrations in your name.
5. The final step will be reading and then agreeing to the Terms of Service, which tells you what you are agreeing to do and not to do with your account. It's important to read over this agreement carefully, as checking the box holds you liable for the information you agreed to.
