AMD versus Pentium

So you've decided that you want a dual core processor. You've already asked yourself all the necessary questions to consider before getting one. Questions like "are dual core processors worth getting? Are dual core processors worth buying at this point in technology? Will they be compatible with my computer?" But you've decided that, yes, you do indeed want a dual core processor. Maybe you're a serious gamer and want to improve your game speed. Maybe you always have one thousand and one programs running on your computer and it can't handle it anymore and so you decide to get a dual core processor.

Whatever your reason is, you've made a good decision. Dual core processors offer great advantages over a single core processor. They can increase the speed of your computer, increase the efficiency of your computer (including making it more energy efficient!) and don't even use more power to run.

But now you have another decision to make. Should you buy an AMD or a Pentium processor? Good question. Before you make a decision, let's look at the advantages and disadvantages of each one.

AMD
Advantages

• It uses less power than two coupled single core processors. This is because there is more power required to send the signals to an external chip and the smaller chip allows the cores to operate at lower power


• It runs a bit faster than the Pentium


• It has wide memory bandwidth


• It uses less power than the Pentium models


• It has slightly better audio capabilities than Pentium


• It has slightly better video capabilities than Pentium


• It has slightly better capabilities with Maxon cinema software than Pentium

Disadvantages

• It makes it harder to do overclocking


• It has no hyperthreading capabilities


• It is a bit more expensive than Pentium

Pentium
Advantages

• It is less difficult to do overclocking


• It is less expensive than an AMD


• It has wide memory bandwidth


• It has hyperthreading capabilities

Disadvantages

• It has slightly less video capabilities than AMD


• It has slightly less capabilities with Maxon cinema software than AMD

These types of dual core processors also vary according to certain types of business programs, entertainment packages and so on. You should look at the types of things you will be doing with your dual core processor before deciding which type to get. Obviously, if you want to do a certain business program that is much more compatible with an AMD processor, you may want to consider purchasing that one instead of Pentium. But if you have no particularly unusual program you'll be running with your dual core processor, consider the above advantages and disadvantages, as well as the current prices before purchasing a new processor.

Overall, the AMD dual core processor would be better for you if you plan on running a lot of entertainment type software, playing a lot of games, or have more money to spend on a dual core processor. However, if you're looking for a processor without specific media capabilities and simply want a dual core processor that will make your computer run faster, enable you to get your work done more efficiently, and you have less money to spend, the Pentium models may be for you.
