An overview of the latest search technology

It is estimated that the average person spends about eleven minutes online when doing a single search. Typing in the subject to search and then wading through literally millions of pages can be time consuming to say the least. However, the latest search technology has made searching much more manageable.

The following is an overview of some of the latest advancements in search technology.

Microsoft MSN
One of the most popular web browsers and search engines, MSN recently went live with a new version of search, with an index of over 5 billion pages. The latest version provides users with a number of improved ways to narrow their results and optimize time. Users can use the Search Builder to narrow their searches by clicking on a number of buttons that allow them to exclude certain terms or domains, limit searches to a certain domain (such as only return pages ending in .org), narrow by country or language, and many other features.

In addition, MSN's latest version can narrow results to only local results and also provides natural language search.

Snap
This search engine has also made a number of enhancements, including an improved interface and a preview powered search. This improvement allows users to preview the website without actually visiting it by providing a screenshot on your window. That way, you can see at a glance whether the site will fit your needs before actually visiting it.

SearchMash
A site belonging to Google, SearchMash also provides the latest in search technology with a number of features. When entering a search term, SearchMash will bring up not only the site link, but an image, blog, video, and Wikipedia results in the corner of the screen, providing you with everything you need to see. It also does all this without interfering with the speed of the search, so results are returned almost instantaneously.

In addition, SearchMash also features a "More Web Results" bar. This makes it easier for users to browse their search results. New results appear at the bottom after the user clicks on the bar, and new results appear without you having to open up another page. Users can also provide feedback.

Hakia
This relatively unheard of search engine operates under the motto "Search for Meaning." Instead of using search keywords, like traditional search engines, Hakia users directly ask the search engine questions (similar to askjeeves.com). Using a new indexing method called QDEX (Query Detection and Extraction), Hakia works on top of Microsoft technologies.

InfoSpace
InfoSpace utilizes the latest search technology in a number of ways. One feature is the toolbar, which supports several feeds, both RSS (Really Simple Syndication) and Atom formats. With this new toolar, users can add the XML feeds to the toolbar's ticker. It can be placed by news headlines and other top search terms for easy viewing. This is exciting because currently, most web publishes have a direct link to the XML code, but up until InfoSpace, few of them gave information of how to subscribe to as well as read the feeds through RSS, as InfoSpace does.

The internet holds a wealth of knowledge for all those who are searching to learn more about particular topics. The latest search technology, like those utilized in the search engines listed above, will help to make searching the internet easier and even faster than before.
