Buyer's guide for desk top computers

Purchasing a desk top computer for your home or business can be an exciting experience, as well as an intimidating experience. Having some basic knowledge about desk top computers and a general idea of what you need and want in a desk top computer can be extremely helpful to avoid making the experience a costly one.

Buying a used desk top computer can save you money but there are a few things that should be asked and looked for. When deciding whether or not to purchase a used computer, thoroughly inspect the computer, inspect the ports as well as the inside and the outside of the computer. Make sure there is no physical damage. Ask if the computer is still under warranty. Sometimes a computer was purchased with a manufacturer warranty that has not yet expired. For example, the computer was purchased brand new with a three year warranty, but the owner has decided to sell it after just one year, which may leave a remaining warranty for two years. Be sure tocheck with the manufacturer to ensure that the remainder of the warranty will be honored, many manufacturers will not transfer the computer warranty. Also research similar computer models that are being sold to compare features and price.

If you are the one selling a desk top computer, be sure to erase the computer's hard disk drive to help keep your personal information safe.

When looking at new desk top computers, ask about manufacturer warranty. Also ask about any warranty or services that may be offered by the store. And don't forget to ask if there are any discounts, promotions or in-store specials available.

There are other things to take into consideration before buying a new or used desk top computer. The type of CD maybe an important factor. Knowing what you intend to use the computer for is going to be extremely helpful in this area. You may want just a standard CD-ROM or you may want a DVD, or CD-R or even a CD-RW drive, but try not to be pressured into buying a desk top computer that is full of expensive options and/or features that you will never use. You will also want to consider the hard drive. Always get the maximum size hard drive to avoid having to purchase an additional hard drive in the future for all your files and information because eventually you will run out of space.

If you are looking at a desk top computer that has been refurbished make sure you have a full understanding of what it means. A refurbished computer is a computer that was previously owned, but looked at and determined to be in proper working condition. A refurbished computer may be a good decision for those not wanting to spend a lot of money, computers that are refurbished are generally less expensive. However, it cannot be sold as new because it has been previously owned and it may not have a manufacturer warranty. So be sure to ask about warranty availability and compare the price of similar new computers to the price of computers that have been refurbished.

Before buying a desk top computer, inquire about the type of support service provided if an issue happens to arise. Ask about support availability. If you have decided to purchase a desktop computer directly from the manufacturer and it is going to be shipped through the mail, be sure to insure the shipment. It is relatively inexpensive, and choosing not to purchase shipping insurance will be an expensive mistake you do not want to make.
