Features you should have on your digital video camera. Each digital camera will have its own set of features. However as a standard there is some basics you can look for. Here is a list of those features and what they do.

Charged Couple Device:

The CCD is the central part of the DV camcorders. The way this sensor works is it will create a video picture by using the recording light intensity to recognize the shapes and images you are looking at. There are different levels of colors, red, green, and blue to reproduce a full color picture.

When you use the three-chip CCD, which is found in the more expensive digital camcorders, the capture is completed in one go around.

Digital Zoom and Optical Zoom:

When getting close to the action is important, it is great to have a good level of zoom lens. However, it is not as important to have a good digital zoom, as it is to have a good optical zoom.

The reason this is important is because the optical zoom will give a good indication of the video image. The general range for this is around the 10X mark for optical, and for digital is it around 120X

Auto focus System:

The auto focus system is nice, especially for beginners. However keep in mind that you have much more freedom with a manual focus. In time you would learn to use it, and will be able to capture much better pictures.

The manual focus control is usually found either as a ring around the lens or as the dual button system that is found on the body.

Program Auto Exposure:

This feature will allow for the camcorder to have all the functions for shooting certain types of footage. This way all you have to do is point and shoot. This is great for beginners. However keep in mind that there is a time when you will want to be able to manually set your own pictures.

Playback and Record Controls

These are very much like the controls on a VCR. These features are the basic Play, Stop, Record, Rewind, Fast Forward, and Pause. These functions act the same, as you would expect. When you push play it plays, when you push stop it stops.

Title

This feature is best not used if you can help it. There will plenty of time to create a title for your footage when you edit. The reason is that once the title is input on the footage, it cannot be removed.

Batteries

Most digital camcorders come with batteries. You will want to purchase an extra set of rechargeable batteries for back up.

Removable Flash Memory

This comes in the forms of SD or MMC. However, there are some that come in memory stick. With this in mind, remember that the larger the memory, the more pictures or video you can make in one setting.

Still Image Capabilities

Many of the digital camcorders have the features available for still image. However if this feature is not available with the camcorder you choose, then you can always take a picture out in the editing process.

With these features, you will be all set to make the movies your family will love for years to come. If this is for business, remember you get what you pay for. So take the time to choose the camera that will meet your needs. These are the features you should have on your digital video camera.
