How do I get AIM?

AIM is an abbreviation for AOL instant messenger. AIM is an instant messaging program that is supported by advertisements. AIM was released by America Online (AOL) in May of 1997 and has been adding new products and updated software to their list of provided services as recently as March 27th 2007. With AIM the registered users are allowed to communicate with each other by means of real time via text, voice, and video transmission over the Internet. AIM is a proprietary freeware instant messaging program which means that versions are available free of charge to clients who wish to download the program. It is the sponsors that advertise on the site that make the program financially advantageous for AOL.

AIM is maintained by AOL LLC and uses the OSCAR instant messaging protocol and the TOC protocol. Since its humble beginnings in releasing AIM version 2.0, AIM has made updates and improvements and has just currently released its 6.10 version. AIM has included person-to-person text messaging, chatroom messaging, and the ability to share files easily with one's "buddies." A buddy in AIM terminology is someone with whom you instant message or otherwise have as a contact person in your AIM buddy list. At version 4.3 of AIM storage space reached sizes previously impossible. In Version 4.3, AIM was able to provide accessibility to individual clients to use and store your contact information on AOL's servers. The result is that with the downloaded software you can organize, keep track of, and instant message up to 600 buddies from any computer with Internet access. Also accompanying this wave of improvements and innovation came the possibility if playing games between buddies.

AIM software is available for free to any individual with compatible software. Workable program options include Microsoft Windows, Mac OS, Mac OS X, Linux, Windows CE, and Palm OS.

With the introduction of palm pilots and even hand held devices that can also be used as a cellular phone (such as the pearl), AIM has grown in popularity.
