Setting up a video blog, vlog, or video cast is easy. There are some things you need to do. So, to set up your video blog, you will need to have and do the following:

  1. Have a video or make a video: To do this, you will want to have a good quality microphone. The microphone you choose should have noise blockers, and should probably be a higher end item. The microphone is going to make the biggest difference when it comes to your video blog. You of course will also need a video camera, and a digital video camera is the best choice for getting your video online. If you use a standard video camera, not digital, you will have an extra job of converting that into a data file later.
  2. High-speed Internet Connection: In order to set up a video blog you will need a high-speed Internet connection, Cable or DSL as the minimum, do not attempt to set up a video blog with dial up. Viewing video blogs with dial up is possible, but not setting them up.
  3. You will need an MP4 encoder: This is how you will convert your video into a usable format if you did not use a digital camera. Your computer will need to have the software to convert your video into the right and there are many different software options available. You will want to find one that works with the operating system you have on your computer. So, if you have Windows, find one that works for Windows, if you have a Mac, you are going to have an easier time as most MP4 encoders are fully supported for an iPod output format.
  4. A computer. To set up your video blog you will need to have a computer, and it needs to have plenty of hard drive space, a high-speed modem or NIC, and it must also have the software. So, do not try and use a laptop unless you have one with plenty of hard drive space.
  5. Audio recording software. This software can usually be downloaded free or at a small cost off the Internet. There are a lot of options and choices, so be sure you find one that is easy to use, has clear sound, and offers some advances features to that you can create the highest quality audio possible.

Once you have all of these things you will do the following:

  • You will use the MP4 encoding software to transfer the video into a format that the computer can use and recognize, or if you did use a digital camera you will use a fire wire connection to get the video onto your computer, or you may need to use another type of video capturing device.

  • You will then want to set up your video cast according to the Apple guidelines. You want to do this because if you put your video cast in the right format, it will be more accessible and usable to others.

  • You will need to format the file for either MPEG-4 or H.264/AVC. Chose whichever option you want.

  • You will then set the audio CODEC; it needs to be set to AAC.

  • You will want to set up the specs in the video section.

  • Compress the file.

  • Transfer the file into an MP4 for video podcasting.

  • Rename the file you are working with to an .MP4 or mp4 extension.

  • Check to make sure your video is playing correctly.

  • Name your video cast.

  • Post the video podcast in an RSS feed or through your video podcast host.
