Learning how to use new software, tips and tricks

While getting new software can be exciting because of the improvements and possibilities associated with it, new software can also be daunting and cause a lot of stress for those who are trying to learn how to use it.Learning how to use new software doesn't need to be scary or too difficult, especially with these tips and tricks:

1. Remember - it takes time to figure it out.
Don't expect to be an expert easily or without some study and practice. A new task or skill (as with any aspect of life, not just software) usually doesn't come completely naturally or becomes perfected without practice.

Keep in mind, though, that some types of software will either be easier or harder to follow. If the new software is similar to what you're already using, it shouldn't be too difficult. On the other hand, if this new software offers more features and does more jobs, it will probably be more difficult to learn. This is important to remember and may save you some extra frustration.

2. Use the buddy system
As with many things, sometimes it is easier and less overwhelming when you have someone else learning with you. Enlist the help of someone else as you tackle the new software. In many cases, someone will have a strength in one area (maybe they're better at following written instructions), while another has their own strengths (maybe they've got more technical, hands-on computer skills).Problems are usually easier to solve when there are two minds tackling them. The old cliché still stands true - two heads are better than one.

3. Read the Manual - or anything else you can get your hands on
Just doing some reading before you try to learn some new software can make a big difference. The manual will probably offer a lot of information all at once, which can be a bit overwhelming. However, reading the manual ahead of time will help you to recognize things you come across in the program later. In many cases, you'll come to some screen or perform some kind of function and think to yourself, "I remember reading about this."

Often software doesn't come with a manual - instead a PDF file is used. Whether it's a manual or PDF, be sure to at least scan through the information. Even if you get a little tidbit of info here and there, at least you'll be a little more familiar with the program. Also consider reading up in books about the specific software - many large bookstores (Barnes and Noble, Borders, etc.) have entire sections devoted to books about software. These can be very helpful.

4. Online Tutorials
Online tutorials are a great tool for anyone who is learning to use a program. These tutorials will often give you a type of test project. The tutorial will then walk you through it, step-by-step.For many people, hands-on learning and application is the most effective way to understand new software.

5. Find a community
With the Internet, it's pretty easy to find someone else that is learning the same software and who is possibly having the same difficulties with it.Search the Internet for user groups and discussion forums. Not only will they help you learn the software, but you can also find a great network for troubleshooting online. Sometimes, if you know other people are struggling or if you are learning with someone else, it can be less frustrating and more encouraging.

6. Go to class
With a little searching, you may find a class in your area about the software you are trying to figure out. Many colleges have community education classes open to the public at night. Also, check to see if your business can coordinate some kind of class at the office.

7. Use tech support
When all else fails, call tech support with questions and concerns. They are paid to answer your questions. Chances are, the people at tech support have dealt with the problems or concerns you are having and they know tried and true methods to solve them. They are experts and can offer tips and insights that you may not get from any other source.

8. Keep at it
The most important thing is to keep using the program. With regular use will come understanding. Take small steps - you don't need to learn the entire program in one day. You will gradually become more comfortable with the software if you use it regularly because trial and error is one of the best learning tools available.
