What you should know about internet data backup services

modem19169736.jpg How do I backup my data over the Internet? This is a fantastic question, for a lot of reasons. In fact, just the other day, I was finishing up an enormous report.Pages and pages of information, graphs, analysis, conclusions, the whole works. It took me days to do it; it was one of the biggest projects I've had to do in a long time.Of course I backed it up-I saved it on both my flash drive and my hard drive. And just as I was finishing up, well we all know the story. It's happened to everyone. My computer crashed.Turns out that I had a terrible virus infection, and I'm not talking about a cold. The entire thing was erased; I'm not entirely sure how, or why, but poof.It was gone.

Backup is a really important thing.I think that we've all learned that lesson at this point. Not a single person has gone through life without having that essential document just disappear into thin air because your computer decides that it can't handle running all of those programs and once and so it's going to freeze on you.You don't have any choice except to reboot the thing, and even if Word saved a draft of your document, it saved it half an hour ago and you're missing three pages. It's important to have at least two copies of all of your documents and files, and that's not just while you're working on them.Let's say that you have everything on your flash drive. So what happens if you lose it?On the other hand, you have everything saved on your hard drive. And then a virus infects your computer and destroys the whole thing. This is not a it'll-never-happen-to-me scenario. It's one of those situations where you don't ask if, but rather, when.

There are a couple of things that are important to look for when you're deciding how to back up your data.First, you want to be able to check up on your data.Verify that it's still there, and that it's doing well.Nobody's messing with it, nothing's missing, everything's okay.Second, you want to make absolutely sure that the location is secure. This second point might be turning you off from backing your data up on the Internet. Can't somebody hack into it and steal all of your vital information? The surprising answer is that backing your data up online is probably the safest way to do so.People can hack into data stored on your computer more easily, and data that's stored online will survive some massive hardware or software crash that will destroy any data that's on your computer or on a USB drive or something along those lines.
So how do you backup your data on the Internet?Well, there are a bunch of different things that you can do.You can create your own virtual network, which isn't nearly as difficult as it sounds. There are also plenty of online sites that will provide a safe place to backup your data on the Internet.Consider them to be like online banks providing safe deposit boxes in which you can store all of your valuables. The key to online back up options is that in most cases, you're the only person who has the key to your safe deposit box.

What the majority of Internet backup companies will do is that you will basically subscribe to their services. They will give you software that you need to install on your computer. The good companies will talk you through the installation either on the phone or in person. You will download software on to your computer. This software will allow you to choose which data files you want to back up on the Internet. Most back up options will require you to have a constant Internet connection, like DSL or cable. You'll want to look around to see if it's possible to back up your data on the Internet if you're still using dial-up (and you'll want to research switching to cable or DSL-you're living in the Stone Age). The first time you back up your information, all of the files will be compressed, and then encrypted. Then the data will be sent over the Internet to offsite data storage facilities. You data remains encrypted, and you're the only one who knows the password.Do NOT forget your password, because NOBODY knows what it is but you.You can back up your data even every hour if you want to, or once a year. You will schedule regular times when your computer will back up your data; just make sure that the computer is on.You'll probably want to schedule back up sessions for night time. When your computer automatically backs up your files, it will check to see if they've been altered in any way, and then it will backup the changes.
