When and when not to charter a private jet?

So you want to charter a private jet. But you're not sure it's the right decision. It is, after all, a very expensive and slightly pretentious thing to do. Maybe you have a good reason. Maybe you don't have a good reason but it's always something you've wanted to do. Perhaps you hate airports and want to avoid them. Or maybe you're just rich and can afford to do whatever you want, including spending your money on an entire jet, just for yourself. Maybe you think that the real elite travel on a private jet, not just in first class.

Whatever your personal reason may be, there are many practical reasons to charter or not to charter a private jet. Let's discuss some of the situations and reasons why you might want to charter a private jet.

 You might want to charter a jet if you are part of a university and your football team travels long distances to games every week. In this situation having a jet owned by the university may be more expensive that you'd like to deal with. By chartering a jet you don't have the expense of owning or maintaining a jet, but you still have the convenience of being able to fly on a private jet.
 You might want to charter a private jet when it's nearing a holiday season and you want to avoid the rush and hassle of the airport. Airports terminals are always filled with noisy people, confused and lost, standing in the middle of the walk-way. If you charter a private jet, you avoid all that. You avoid the lines, the noise, the smells, and the time wasted waiting for delays.
 You might want to charter a private jet if you're in an exceptional hurry to arrive at your destination, or just on a very particular schedule. Private jets allow to you to travel faster and more efficiently. They are also flexible for your schedule. If you want to leave at a certain time, but then change your mind at the last minute, that's ok, because you're paying to fly when you want to fly.
 You might want to charter a private jet when you're traveling to an unusual destination. Many private jet lines fly to places that regular airlines won't or can't get to.
 You might want to charter a private jet when you're traveling with people with special needs, or if you yourself are sick and tired of traveling with the everyday traveler. When chartering a jet, you get to choose the other passengers that you have to endure the flight with.

Here are situations when you might not want to charter a private jet.

 You wouldn't want to charter a private jet if you are experiencing financial difficulties. They can be over 50% more expensive to fly per hour than a regular airliner.
 If you fly less than 10 hours per year, you probably do not need to charter a jet on a continued basis. However, you may want to charter a jet on a one time basis.
 You may not want to charter a jet if you're feeling environmentally conscious. After all, flying a plane does require quite a bit of fuel. An environmentally friendly person probably would not want to charter his own private jet, but would instead fly with the masses to conserve fuel.

In reality, the main reason not to charter a private jet is the cost. If you can afford to do so, and you also fit the characteristics mentioned above (hate airports, have a tight schedule to manage, travel to remote locations, etc.) then go for it. Chartering a private jet can be a very enjoyable experience and make traveling that much more pleasant.
