How to keep up with the IT world as a manager

As a business manager, it is important that you keep up with the IT world. However, information technology is changing so quickly and so rapidly, that things might be outdated even before people begin to really start using them! As a manager, it might seem a little overwhelming to try and keep up with all of the things that are going on in the IT world. However, there are a couple of things that you can do to help you keep up with the IT world. Here are a couple of simple things that you can do to keep up with the IT world, since we know that your time is rather limited as a manager!

• Browse the web regularly for information technology websites: As a manager, we know that your time is rather limited, and that you have a lot of responsibilities. However, you might be able to take a couple of minutes out of your day to browse a couple of information technology websites. These IT and technology websites are great because they not only discuss current IT news, but they also have sections which discuss the way that IT is going in the future. Looking at these different technology website sections will really help you to keep up with the IT world as a manager! Some of the most popular websites that you will find good information on are IT world (found at www.ITWorld.com). Another good website that you might consider looking at is PC world (www.pcworld.com). There is a lot of information found in the Technology Trends section that will help you keep up to date with technology as a manager too!


• Read the technology and IT news: Because technology and IT are such a huge part of the world today, many large newspapers have devoted special sections of their paper to the advancements and possibilities of the IT world. These newspapers also discuss new products and ideas that are coming out in the IT world and in the world of technology in general. For example, the New York Times has a great “Technology” section which is very helpful. You can find this section in the regular newspaper, or you can also look online (www.nytimes.com) to read and keep up with the IT world as a manager. In addition, you might want to consider reading other online papers and publications, such as Tech News World (found at www.technewsworld.com). This is another great resource to help you keep up with the IT world as a manager.


• Talk with your IT employees: Although as a manager you might want to seem like you are more prepared and knowledgeable than some of your employees, this might not be the right attitude to take in regards to keeping up with the IT world. Make sure that you chat with your IT staff members regularly and see if they are aware of any new developments in information technology. It is likely that your IT staff members love to learn about new IT plans and ideas as well, and they might have heard things that you are not aware of! Your employees can be a great source of the latest IT information, if you give them a chance to discuss what they know with you!

These are a couple of ways that you can keep up with the IT world as a manager. Some other ideas that you could try are joining an IT mailing list from an IT website, or perhaps to join an IT blog. This way, you’ll always be keeping up with all of the changes that are taking place in the IT world!
