What's training good for?
When you originally hire an employee, you typically put them through a rigorous training program of at least a week. This training should include all the information they could ever possibly need to properly perform their job duties. Unfortunately some employers do not see the benefits of enrolling their employees in a longer training program and they don’t see the point of training them later on down the road.
Businesses are always growing and changing to meet the demands of their customers. If your company changes and grows, don’t you think your employees should do the same thing? With change comes gaps in knowledge. You may hire the best employees that are fresh out of graduate school but in about 5 years, things will change and they will need to learn new skills if they want to continue progressing with the times.
Send your employees away for yearly training seminars where they can learn skills that are vital to their jobs. Marketing specialists needs to go to conventions where they can learn more about search engine optimization and other new marketing techniques that can be used to further your company. Human resource professionals also need to go to conventions where they will be able to learn new skills that can help them with job interviews along with dealing with complicated issues like email abuse and internet abuse.
The benefit of holding regular training seminars is that it can help your employees get back in touch with the goals of the company. Sometimes we lose sight of why we have particular jobs because we get so wrapped up in other things. When this happens, your focus may drift away from the company and you aren’t exactly representing the mission statement of the business anymore.
Training not only helps people understand why they work for a particular company it will also show them that the company has a commitment to them. Pulling employees out of work and sending them to a training seminar is not cheap and when you do this, your employees will be able to see how much you have invested in them. It’s a great way to show loyalty to your staff. The other great benefit of training is that it helps your employees advance their skills, opening them up to new opportunities and room for growth within the organization.
While training has a number of benefits, you should not look upon it as your solution to fixing problematic employees. There are always going to be some staff members that just skim by and no matter how many times you send them to training seminars or give them pep talks, they aren’t going to get it. Training may help them a little bit, but your best option may be to cut your ties with them and invest your money into a new employee.
As a manager, you too need to attend regular training seminars to learn new skills that will help you run your organization. Learning to communicate is always going to be on the agenda and the trainers may have some new programs that have worked and can help you and your employees see eye to eye. Mangers need to make sure they are properly trained on all the different aspects of the company. Since you are often responsible for training the employees, you need to be well-versed in your subject material in order to be a successful trainer.
Training is effective and it is the best way to get all of your employees on the same page about the different rules you have as an organization. If you cannot afford to send your employees away, consider bringing an expert into the organization and have them teach your entire staff on site.
