The essence of manufacturing is turning raw material into finished goods that you can then sell for a profit. This makes finding high quality raw materials a priority if you are the owner of a manufacturing company. It can be a challenge to find the right materials for your production process. You may need to look far and wide before you find the right suppliers for what you need. However, with some diligence and patience you should be able to secure the raw material that you need in order to produce finished goods. Here are some things you should know about finding raw materials for manufacturing-

• Be creative-This is an especially important tip if you are smaller manufacturer. While a large scale manufacturer can often buy raw materials without a thought as to price a smaller manufacturing company may have a lot more trouble. Many suppliers require a minimum order when it comes to purchasing raw materials. This can leave smaller manufacturing companies wondering how they can come up with enough cash or even use a minimum order. However, if you take the time to carefully plan and look at the options you will be able to make it work. Sometimes finding another company (or several), to join with in purchasing can help you to get over this hurdle.
• Be prepared to spend some time looking-Finding the right supplier can be a time consuming process. You will need to be able to take the time to do your research and be prepared to spend some time on the phone. You may find that you have to talk to several different people before you find the right supplier. However, if you are finding that you can’t find that right supplier on your own be sure to ask for recommendations from suppliers who turn you down. They may know who you should be talking to.
• Be looking locally-Don’t assume that you will have to ship your raw materials in from somewhere else. Many times you may find that the supplier you need is right in your own community. You can even start by opening the phone book. Try searching for distributors for the raw materials that you are needing. Don’t overlook the use of the internet. You can search faster and more efficiently then by using just about any other method. You should be able to quickly see if there are any viable options for raw material suppliers in your area.
• Be looking internationally-You may need to broaden your search if you can’t find the right raw materials supplier where you are located. However, looking overseas can often be helpful if you are needing a raw material that is rare or hard to find. You may find a larger availability for certain materials when you widen your search. Best of all you may find suppliers who are overseas are anxious to break into the U.S. market so they may be more willing to negotiate on price.
• Be thinking outside of the box-The purchase of the raw materials that you need will be a considerable expense. Because of this you should employ every idea that you have that could reduce the cost in a proactive manner. You may want to consider using a cheaper alternative or using something that is easier to get. However, it should be noted that if you do choose a cheaper substitute you want to make sure that it does not lessen the quality of your goods or services. Finally, you may want to consider reusing waste that is put off by other businesses. While this is a solution that is not always viable if you can do this you can reduce the cost of your raw materials significantly.
