Introduction

If we all just knew what marketing techniques were best for your businesses, then there would be no need for a marketing department or marketing strategies. As it is, there is no universal law that tells each business how to operate in the most optimal way possible. If there were, the author of such a reference guide would be very rich indeed. The truth is that each business must do the work for themselves and in some cases fail before they can succeed.

Instructions

Determining what marketing technique is best for your business involves a number of strategies that may be a combination of tried and true principles of marketing and some strategies that you decide on as a company. Below you will find just a few suggestions for places to start and things to do in order to find the marketing technique that is best for your business.

Steps to determining what marketing technique is best for your business

  • Know your target audience (be where they are, do what they are doing, etc.) - Knowing your target audience is the single most important step in determining what marketing technique is best for your business. The whole point of marketing is to get people to buy your product. So the best way to market is to know as much as you can about the people who are most likely to buy your product and then design your marketing strategy accordingly. Very few companies will have a product that everyone will be an interested audience for. But even in these rare cases, the customer should be the focus of any marketing work that it done. As a marketer you should be able to answer where your target market is typically located, their annual income, what they do on a daily basis, where their priorities are, etc.
  • Have a budget - Naturally your marketing budget is going to dictate what techniques you will be able to actually apply. Of course we never have the kind of budget that we would like to have especially in marketing, so it is in your best interest to research well so that the budgeted money that is spend is spent on the most promising methods possible. Also remember that there are many different very low cost and even some no cost methods of advertising that are certainly worth considering.
  • Be opened to making changes and learning from mistakes - Marketing is not a science and there will be times when even though you have done your research and planned your marketing strategy well, that you will not receive the financial rewards that you had hoped for. Many times there are hidden variables or variables beyond your scope of control that will affect the best marketing plan and turn it into something that is ineffective. Innovative thinking is always an excellent tool to have in cases where the data and the results simply do not match up.

Conclusion

Determining which marketing technique is best for your business will most likely start with basic knowledge, contain detailed information about the target market and end with the implementation of a plan that can be feasibly executed with the budget that you have available to you. Remember that people study marketing for years before they are able to spout off different techniques for marketing that would work ideally in a given situation. If you do not have the resources to hire such an experienced group of people, do not be too hard on yourself for making a few mistakes on your way to discovering the right marketing equation for success for your company.
