Many business owners have overlooked the usage of trade shows as a way to get their marketing message out to their customers. Trade shows are a great way to present yourself both to your customers and your competition. However, just like any other marketing method it is important that you carefully plan how you will present yourself at a trade show. The bottom line is that when you present your business in a positive manner it can be a great marketing tool but if you fail to do that you may seriously damage your business' reputation. Here is what you need to know about how to market effectively at a trade show-

- Have a plan-You need to take the time to carefully plan what you are going to do and how you are going to do it at the trade show. There are certain questions that you should ask yourself such as:
1. How can I make my business stand out?
2. What do I need to do better then my competition?
3. What will customers and other key contacts be looking for at the trade show?
4. Do I have the information that I want communicated in an easy to read and easy to take format?
- Get all of the details for the trade show-Part of being successful with your marketing at a trade show is knowing what you will have to work with. You should get as many details as you can. These details should include: the number of expected visitors, the location and layout of your booth, what attractions will be at the show, and what you will be expected to do. It is especially important that you get all of the specifications concerning the amount of space that you will have to work with. This will also help you to design a layout that will be eye-catching and cause people to stop at your booth.
- Make your booth professional looking-At a trade show your marketing will be all about how you look. You want to make sure that everything you do has a professional look to it. Start with making sure that your any materials that you use are clean, wrinkle free, and eye catching. Remember, that you only have a few seconds to attract passersby so you need to be able to attract and keep their attention in only a few seconds. It can be beneficial to spend money on professional printing for any signs, banners, or materials that you will be handing out.
- Offer an incentive for people to stop at your booth-While trade shows can be a great marketing tool keep in mind that you will have a lot of competition. You will need to give people a reason to stop at your booth. Offering an incentive can be a great way for people to stop and see what you offer. However, you need to make sure that whatever you offer is of value to your potential customers. If you try to get their interest by offering something that is not valuable you may even turn off potential customers to your business and its products and services.
- Be approachable-People attend trade shows to find information. If you are not approachable then your potential customers will be hesitant to stop and see what you are offering. You need to make sure that through your body language, attitude, and presentation that you are very approachable to anyone who wants to talk to you. This is the best way to make sure that your marketing efforts at a trade show will pay off.
