Creating a marketing plan for your small business is in many cases the deciding factor in whether or not you have a successful business. "Do I even have a desirable product?" "How am I supposed to get the word out?" "And how am I to do this on my limited budget?" are huge stumbling blocks for many looking to market their small business.

When you are thinking about marketing for your small business you must first have confidence in the product or service that you are trying to market. Do you really understand your target audience? Ask yourself:


1. Do I know my buyers? Be specific. Who am I trying to market to? If my product is for the older generation, internet marketing is probably not the best idea. Identify the needs of your particular buyers. Know where they would be most likely to go first if they were interested in what your small business has to offer.
2. Next, as you are trying to market your small business you must be able to answer the question "What makes me different?" What can you offer the client that is going to make them come and do business with you instead of the other guy? What makes you better than everyone else? Having knowledge of your competition can prove invaluable.
3. Be powerful, confident and compelling. You must first convince the buyer emotionally that your product is meant for them. Without this you are left with only a good idea and you need sales!

Now that you have a firm foundation of marketing ideas, you must decide what your public outlet will be. How will you use your limited resources in a way that gets you the biggest bang for your buck? You must get the word out publicly. Marketing your small business can obviously be done in a number of ways. You can use business cards, create logos, or pass out fliers. There are two methods that stand out as preferred methods; internet use and word of mouth. These two methods are arguably the most cost effective and generally yield rapid results.

Internet Marketing: The internet is an easy way to reach target audiences quickly. Also, the internet's reach is limitless. Your small business can be located in Phoenix, but your small business marketing can reach anywhere in the world. The internet is the first place that the majority of household consumers look when they are shopping for goods or services. Your internet site can offer many different possibilities for your buyer. Just a few of these options include:
1. On-line purchasing
2. Success stories or product testimonials
3. Frequently asked questions and answers
4. Information about your company, the development of the product
5. Using your web-site to communicate your compelling reasons for why your client needs this product.
6. E-books or e-newsletters, where your target audience can have free access to important information that will further promote your business! The possibilities are endless!

Word of Mouth: Some of the best marketing for small businesses is done through word of mouth. A happy customer telling another potential buyer of their experience is priceless. Creating positive relationships with loyal buyers can then be turned into brilliant marketing strategies. Leverage these relationships. It is not looked down upon to ask existing happy customers for referrals. Referrals like these balloon as word gets out that you really have a product that people are going to like. What may be even better about this technique for marketing your small business is that it is free!

Marketing your small business is not hard when you are passionate about and confident in the product that you are selling. When you couple that with an effective marketing technique that works with your budget, you are bound to succeed!
