Mobile Marketing Tips

The following are ten tips for getting improved response rates using mobile marketing and SMS.
Tip one: Make sure your opt-out is easy to find. Believe it or not, people want to know that it is going to be easy to stop receiving SMS from you, and this does more good than bad for you. Thus, make it easy for people to opt out, for example, include in every message one line that says, "Reply STOP to be removed." Or "Reply UNSUBSCRIBE to be removed". It is really simple, and will make people trust you more.

Tip two: Get your audience to help you build your database by occasionally asking them to forward to friends, in this include opt-in instructions like "Text OPT IN to 33377" This can help you get your text message ads viral, and get more people on your service. It will make a difference if it is really simple, so try to make it as easy as possible. Tell them what to text (the keyword) and where to text it (the shortcode).

Tip three: Get permission before you start marketing to people. You may want to just start adding cell phone numbers to your mobile marketing database, but if you do not get permission from users first, it will backfire on you. Instead, create a web form, or a shortcode that people can text to opt in. You may even want to go for the double opt in, or confirmation opt in, so that you know the person really wants to be added before you add them. This will mean fewer complaints for you to deal with.

Tip four: Make sure your opt-in process covers you legally, and sets expectations. It should include something about how often your audience can expect to get a text message from you, and include an easy way to opt out at this point if they think it is too high, or don't want to pay charges for messaging. (Creating an opt out at this point will help you track that data to determine if your frequency is too high to retain interested parties). Be sure to also say somewhere that "Standard rates may apply".

Tip five: Pay for a dedicated shortcode. It is going to cost you, but it will help you keep things moving, and you won't have to deal with any legal problems that may arise from shared codes. In addition, it can help you brand around that code.

Tip six: Make sure your message is relevant, you are sending it to a personal device, and it will interrupt a person, as most people carry their mobile devices with them everywhere they go. Thus, if it is not relevant, they may not be too happy.

Tip seven: Shorten time frames. In traditional marketing you start advertising about a sale a week or two before it hits, with SMS and mobile marketing, you do it day of. Don't send a message that does not apply that day.

Tip eight: Keep it short and clear. You want to be concise, under 160 characters, but with plenty of info. Use shortcuts like 2 instead of 2 or B instead of be. As this will give you more room to work with.

Tip nine: Personalize using tokens, this will increase response rates, and build a better relationship with customers.

Tip ten: Don't limit yourself to only mobile messaging. Instead, use all forms of marketing, and combine them to be most effective.
