Positioning as a part of your marketing campaign can help increase sales drastically; and in the world of marketing that is what's most important. In the encyclopedia, the definition of positioning is this, "the process by which marketers try to create an image of identity in the minds of their target market of is product, brand, or organization."So let's put that in Laman terms; positioning is taking a good look at who your competition is and figuring out a way to be completely different than they are. This will ultimately give you a strong advantage over the competition and gives customers a unique, desirable product.Positioning is most often used in terms of web marketing, and generally speaking there are some general positions concepts you should know, and it involves a process of steps.

Positioning Concepts
There are typically three different types of positioning concepts:
1. Functional Positions which do three things; solve problems, provide benefits for customers, and get a favorable perception by potential investors and lenders.
2. Symbolic Position which help with enhancing your self image, ego identification, social meaningfulness, and affective fulfillment.
3. Experiential positions that provide sensory and cognitive stimulation.

Positioning Process
The Process in which the product is "positioned" involves some general rule of thumbs, or steps. If you are using positioning as part of your marketing technique then you will want to keep these steps in mind.
1. Define the Target market in which your product (or brand) will compete. You must know who your buyers are before you can market anything.
2. Dimensions.Your dimensions are the attributes which define the product space.
3. Collecting information is the next step in using positioning. You will need information from a sample of customers on what their perception is of each product and its relevant attributes.
4. Determine each product's share of mind.Share of mind is the amount of attention that is required by something, and the time that is actually spent thinking about something.Understanding mind share allows you to cut through all the "clutter" and organize your brand name, websites or products.
5. Determine the product's current location in the product space.
6. Determine the target market's ideal vector and determine the position of your product in relation to the ideal vector.
7. Position

So why is all this so important? Why would you want to use positioning as part of your marketing technique?Bottom line is that using positioning can increase the amount of sales you make which increases your revenue.Positioning helps you stand out from all the other "run of the mill" websites and brands. Here are some quick tips on what you should or shouldn't do when positioning:
-

  • Do select a niche for your brand.Concentrate on one area.

  • - Do stay ahead of the competition. This requires a lot of research and modification.

  • - Don't start a "make money online blog."

  • - Don't get lazy and stop doing your research on the latest "stuff" just because you're making a lot more money.

  • - Do differentiate yourself from all the mundane, boring websites.Use video, audio, etc. to stand out from others.

  • - Do publish a book. For some reason, people think that if your information is on hardcopy you are more credible.

  • - Don't lie are abuse your list subscribers. You cannot put a price on loyalty.

  • - Don't do a Joe Kumar. You know the "30 days to Internet Marketing Success" guy?

Using positioning as a part of your marketing technique can be very beneficial for you.The trick is that you have to know how to use it properly, or you will just mix in with everyone else.
