Successful marketing of your business can mean the difference between the long term survival and growth of your business, and a business that quietly fades away. Often times, when things are tough business owners make the mistake of thinking that they should reduce or even eliminate their marketing. This can be a crucial mistake, for your business. You should keep in mind that if your customers don't where what you can offer them and where they can find you, how will they buy from you? Marketing is what allows you to determine what your customers are looking for and then market your business to meet their needs. Here is what you need to know about business marketing-

- Don't focus just on growth-Many times business owners think that their marketing must focus only on gaining new customers. However, studies who that your customers that you already have, are the ones that are making the most purchases. You new customers will only hesitantly buy from you, but your existing customers are the ones that will keep your business going. For this reason you should focus your marketing on the following areas: having your existing customers buy more from and having your existing customers buy more expensive products, from you. Both of these marketing strategies are viable ways to grow your bottom line. You should not be concerned that you won't attract new customers, since both of these marketing strategies, will also attract new customers to you as well.
- Grow your customer base strategically-Too often business owners try to be all things to all people. There are few (if any) companies that can successfully do this. The core of effective marketing is finding the ways that you can appeal to the people who are most likely to buy your product or service, in other words your target market. You will need to focus on attracting the right customers to your business in the most cost effective way possible. The most important step to take is to do the right amount of market research. This will be invaluable information to you as you formulate your marketing strategies. You should also take a close look at what products and services, your business offers. You want to make sure that you are offering what your market is going to want. In addition, you need to make sure that you have priced correctly. Your product or service must be priced competitively. Do not make the mistake of thinking that if you under price everyone that you will win a bigger market share. The wrong price can be fatal to your marketing strategy. If you price your product to high, your customers will buy it someplace else, and if you price to low, your target market will feel that what you are offering is of little value. Finally, you should position yourself and what your business offers, as the solution to your customer's needs or wants. This has been shown to be the most effective way to grow your customer base.
- Don't try to keep up with the big boys-Business owners of smaller companies should not let themselves get sucked into trying to keep up with their bigger competitors. If you try to match your larger competitors, dollar for dollar in their marketing strategy, you will most likely find yourself running out of cash and closing your doors. The smaller the business that you own, the more creative you will need to be in your marketing. The good news is that there are many different ways that smaller businesses can market their product or service, for little or even no money.
