Studies have shown that almost all successful businesses share certain things. These factors or characteristics contribute largely to the overall success of the business. In addition, when business owners are surveyed as to what has made their business successful, they are found to give many of the same answers. While running a business can be a difficult and at times overwhelming challenge, there are certain things that can help contribute to its success. Here are some tips to help your business succeed-

- Have some actual money-The bottom line is that debt financing alone, is not a good way to start your business. Too often business owners rely solely on debt to get their businesses up and then if the worst should happen, they are still responsible, for paying it back. You want to make sure that you take on as little debt financing as possible. You need to explore other options, for getting the money you need to start your business. Take a close look at your own resources, talk to family and friends and even seek out investors, for your prospective business. In addition, you need to remember to have some money set aside, for your living expenses, if you are not going to be working, while you are getting your business up and going. The bottom line is that few businesses are profitable, before they are a year old, so you will need some to live in on, if you don't have another source of income.
- Think frugal in everything you do-While you may dream of a corner office and a luxurious conference room to meet with clients, the reality of opening a business, need to be based in frugality. You should have a realistic determination of just how much money, you will need to open your business-on a bare bones basis. You need to keep in mind that you can add those luxuries you dream of at a later date, as your business grows and succeed. So for now it is important to resist the temptation to rent out expensive space and hire a full staff. You can use a lot of cost cutting measures to get your business up and running. In addition, be careful about hiring to many employees, as you want to make sure that the workload is a realistic match to your staffing needs.
- Have the right type of protection-Most businesses start out as a sole proprietorship. This can be an easy way to get your business up and running, but it offers little legal protection, should your business need it. Keep in mind that if someone sues your business when you have this type of business structure, they are suing you as well. You need to make sure that you take the appropriate legal steps so your business is legally protected. You can consult with your attorney and professional tax preparer to determine what is the best type of legal protection, for your business. Another form of protection that businesses must have is the right insurance. Opening a business is a risky venture, and you want to mitigate that risk as much as possible. Consult with an experienced business insurance professional to determine, what type of business insurance you should be purchasing.
- Know how to make money-This may seem like a patently obvious tip, for running a successful business. However, many business owners make the mistake of thinking that large sales equals profitability. The reality is that even if you have a lot of sales, you may not be making money. You need to make sure that you are profitable enough to cover your costs. Each time you make a sale, you should have an idea of what the break even point, for covering your costs are. This is the fastest way to determine if you are really making money.
