How to manage your employees for better morale
If you are a business owner or manager then you most likely know how important the morale of your employees is in terms of the long term success of your business. If you want your business to succeed you will need to take steps to make sure that your employees have high morale and job satisfaction. Keep in mind that low employee morale can mean low productivity and unhappy customers which can affect the very survival of your business. The good news is that there are things that you can do in order to increase the morale at your business. Here is what you need to know about how to manage your employees for better morale-
• Be a manager not the boss-No one likes to just be told what to do. You want to make sure that you are using business management skills rather then just barking out orders to the people around you. Your employees will quickly find it degrading and humiliating to be told what to do all of the time. You want to work with your employees and allow them the opportunity to get to know and trust you. Finally, remember that just because you are the boss it doesn’t mean that you can’t ask your employees to take on certain tasks rather then ordering them to.
• Have an open door policy-Savvy business owners understand that their workforce is one of their most valuable assets. They use this asset wisely in order to further the growth and development of their business. Keep in mind that your employees may know things about your business, its products and services, and most importantly your customers that you may not even be aware of. You want to make them feel comfortable enough that they will come to you and share their concerns, ideas, questions, and even advice. The more you take the time to listen and respond to your employees concerns the most likely your employees will have higher morale and job satisfaction and want to continue working with you.
• Show respect to your employees-Many business owners feel that if they don’t do say or do anything negative toward their employees then that’s enough. However, your employees will want positive affirmation from you for the effort they put into their jobs. You can also significantly boost employee morale by being respectful of the opinions and ideas that your employees offer. When they give input you need to listen and respond in an appropriate manner. Even if you don’t end up using the idea(s) that your employees have given you they will feel respected because you took the time to listen to them.
• Offer incentives-Your employees want to feel valued and recognized for the work that they do. You can do this in an effective way by offering incentives that are tied to business goals. However, you will need to make sure that any incentive program is easy to understand and achievable. Overly complicated incentive programs that are hard to understand will actually demoralize your employees. You want to offer an employee incentive program that will encourage your employees to work hard without making it to hard to achieve their goals and claim the incentive.
• Understand that your employees have lives outside of work-Today, most successful business managers understand that their employees have full and demanding lives outside of work. While you won’t be able to accommodate everything in your employee’s life you can improve morale by offering perks such as: flex time, part time work, and telecommuting in order to allow your employees to pursue personal goals while working for your business.
