Kindle

laptop30767380.jpgIf you want one of the coolest gadgets out there, you need to invest $299 into Amazon's Kindle portable reading device. Kindle allows you to download books and other digital media and take it with you everywhere you go. The original Kindle device sold out in less than 6 hours. The Kindle 2, released in early 2009, has additional features like faster page-refreshing, reduced thickness, and more internal memory. In mid-2009, Amazon released Kindle DX which has a larger screen and includes PDF file downloads. This is helpful for readers that want to download newspaper content. What makes Kindle so unique is the E Ink they use. The electronic ink looks similar to that of the ink on a real page.

Kindle can be used without connecting to a computer. You can download the books through Amazon Whispernet using the Spring EVDO network, but you won't be able to browse the internet like you can with other wireless devices. Kindle allows you to read the content in any type of light. It doesn't feature a backlight so its easier read no matter what setting you are in. The feature of downloading the books allows you to do it for free, it doesn't cost you anything to hook into Amazon Whispernet and syncing it is free. The cost will come when you download something. This means you don't need to worry about signing a contract and paying a monthly service fee.

Kindle DX holds about 4GB of memory which is around 3500 non-illustrated books. You can download books for $0.99 to $200. The nice feature you have with Kindle is that you can enlarge the text if you can't read it in the smaller sizes. The screen on the Kindle DX is 9.7 inches, which can help you see your books much easier. The new screen allows you to see the PDF in actual print size. The new DX also features a softer screen, making it easier on the eyes to read the content.

Many people are sold on Kindle because you can not only download books and newspapers, you can download blogs and magazines as well. Carrying around a Kindle that holds thousands of books is much easier than grabbing a copy of the daily paper and several books. Electronic reading allows you to save room in your home as you don't need a huge library to hold all of your books. The other nice part about Kindle is you are doing your part for the environment since you are not purchasing paper books and newspapers.

When you decide to download a book or paper, it will take less than a minute for it to upload to your device. The screen is in black-and-white, giving the books and papers a true realistic touch. You also don't have to worry about the device getting too hot. It regulates itself so you can read it as long as the battery is charged.

If you don't want to purchase Kindle because you want to have the ability to connect to the internet with a portable reading device, purchase the iPod Touch. For $299 or less, you can get the iPod Touch and receive access to the internet and download the same books that are available to Kindle users. Recently, Amazon released the software application that makes the books available to iPod users. When you download the book, you will need to agree to Amazon's user policy which states that the books are non-returnable.

Kindle and iPod both feature great portable reading devices. Most users prefer Kindle if you want to use it strictly for book reading. For internet and other reading, look into the iPod.
