Picking the right broadband service

manwithheadache19287712.jpgWhen the internet was first invented, people were happy with dial-up connections because they didn't know any different. Slow connection speeds and people tying up the home phone line spurred the invention of faster types of internet connections. Nowadays most people use DSL or cable internet service. Currently about 16 million Americans have either DSL or cable internet service. This article will provide a comparison between the two so you can choose one that fits your needs.

DSL
DSL is short for Digital Subscriber Line. This type of service is normally offered through your phone company. The internet connection will travel to your computer through the use of copper phone wires. DSL service has it's own dedicated line so you can use the internet and still have access to your home phone line. DSL is the 2nd most popular type of high-speed internet access, coming in 2nd to cable internet service.

In order to use DSL, you will need to purchase a modem and possible a wireless router if you want to connect your wireless devices to the internet. You also need an Ethernet card and you must find a company like Qwest that is willing to sell you the service. Usually you can rent the modem with a wireless router or you have the option of purchasing your own. Renting is a good strategy because it is fully covered by the provider so if there is a problem with it, they will replace it for free.

DSL is definitely faster than dial-up service, but it's not as fast as cable. You have the option as to how fast you want your internet connection to be. The basic service is normally the cheapest, but it's usually the slowest. It works fine for home use, but if you plan to use it for your business, it's a wise decision to upgrade or move onto cable internet service. Another downside to DSL is that it's not always available in your area. Verizon actually offers DSL service, but it's still up and coming so a lot of people are unable to get it.

The average cost of DSL service is about $36.99-$100.00 a month. Of course this depends on your provider and the file size service you purchase.

Cable
If you want a super-fast internet connection, cable is the way to go. Cable uses traditional television cable lines to send the internet to your computer. Like DSL, you will need a modem and an Ethernet card in order to use it. Currently, there are about 2 times the amount of cable internet users than DSL users. This is because you can expect faster download speeds, but it will get slower if you live in an area with a lot of cable internet subscribers.

Cable internet service does have its limitations. Since you are essentially sharing the line with other people, you will need to sign a contract that states you will not run a web server from your line. There are also limitations on the number of daily downloads you can have and you will be charged extra if you exceed your limit.

To receive cable service, you can connect with some of the major companies like Earthlink and America Online, but most people prefer to use Comcast or other cable providers. If you have cable TV service through Comcast, they will lower your monthly bill for internet and television service by $10 or more per month.

The average cost of cable internet service ranges from $33-$100 a month. Most users report they pay an average of $50 per month, but the extra investment is worth it because it's faster.
