Tips to help you improve employee retention
Having good employees is the backbone of any successful business. You are only as good as your employees and the talents and services they can provide. A staff that has exceptional customer service, drive, teamwork and talent is hard to come by, and even harder to keep. When you've got a great team, the last thing you want to see is the departure of even one piece of that puzzle.
Creating a positive workplace requires structure, respect and an environment that encourages personal growth and job development. We have put together some tips on holding on to this goal:
- Create a positive environment: Provide training for your managers on positive workplace environments and equip your supervisors with the skills they need to encourage and develop positive behaviors. Keeping the morale high in the office will also enhance your momentum and drive in production.
- Clarify roles and responsibilities: Employees and managers alike will benefit from clear, direct expectations of their role in the company. Job descriptions that detail responsibilities help employees thrive in their position. We all like to understand what we need to accomplish and what methods we can use to accomplish our tasks. Ensuring that there is good understanding of each position and that the right people are in the right job is the best plan for developing a healthy environment. Nothing is more frustrating to an employee than not knowing what they need to be doing each day when they come into the office.
- Support your team: When dedicated employees feel like they don't have the knowledge or training to be successful in their position, they'll leave. Enable them to do their job and improve their skills by offering ongoing training and encouraging their participation and feedback.
- Benefits: It's no secret that even the wealthiest companies have had to cut back on job perks, but it's not always about cash bonuses. Employees like to feel appreciated, so even if that may be additional paid time off, a luncheon to show your thanks, or gifts here and there, they like to know you're paying attention. Do your best to offer things such as insurance, leave and a sense of family first. Flexibility without detriment to the company can go a long way in keeping happy, hard working employees.
- Professional growth: Create a career development plan for each employee. Preparing them for success through personal growth instills a sense of security and loyalty.
- Reward good work: It takes more than just good wages to keep good employees happy. An effective way of showing your appreciation is by just thanking them once in a while for a job well done. Take time to talk to your employees, get their feedback and listen to their ideas. Don't wait for a performance evaluation to ask how they are doing or if they are satisfied in their position. Create an incentive program for all staff that measures success and creative thinking, not just sales.
- Be approachable: Open door policies are good for owners and managers. Encourage your supervisors to be approachable and work as a team leader, not just a boss. Attitudes generally reflect leadership, so help your managers be people-oriented.
As a business owner, you may not always be able to match the outside offers for your employees. In order to keep them, you'll need to think outside the box and offer them something that might be more important than just a healthy salary. When you get the team you desire, put together a list of concessions you are willing to provide in order to keep them happy and together.
