Local SEO

Local SEO campaigns differ from national campaigns or global in that you are targeting a very specific audience. Companies that provide products or services only available to a certain geographic region should focus their marketing on local SEO. Here are some tips:

First, no matter what else you do, you need to have good content and quality links. The better quality content you provide, the more likely you are to get organic rankings, and good feedback on your site. If you have quality content links are easier to come by, and customers are more interested in spending time on your site.

Second, be sure to take advantage of tools like Google places. You will want to create a profile that includes your business information, hours of operation, contact information, a photo of your retail space if you have one, etc. Having a solid profile will help you local SEO because it will give people a reason to visit. Filling it with things like videos, coupons, product offerings, product information, etc. will increase your local SEO. It will also improve brand awareness and make you seem more legitimate.

Third, use registries. Register at Yahoo! Local and Bing Local, as well as any other local directories you can find. People often trust these names more than anything else, and thus being registered with them will help you get the rankings you desire locally. Thus, when someone searches for your specialty with a geographic qualifier, you will come up. Some of the best local directories to be listed in include:

  • Better Business Bureau

  • Brownbook.net

  • Citysearch.com

  • Angieslist.com

  • judysbook.com

  • Kudzu.com

  • Best of the Web

  • local.com

  • MerchantCircle.com

  • yelp.com

Verify your business on Google so that it is correct. You certainly wouldn't want people finding you at the top of their search engine, only to have an improper link, or an old phone number. Update and stay on top of what information is out there. On the various directories, you want to be sure to keep the same formatting, and make sure all information is correct.

Lastly, a big part of local SEO is authenticity, and customer interaction. So, it is wise to ask customers for reviews, offer incentives, etc. It can't hurt to offer incentives to improve online traffic, such as coupon codes, etc. Get listed on Google maps, and make sure that customers can find you, and have a reason to come to you over someone else.

When you combine these tactics with good SEO tactics in general, including links that are worth while (not link farm links), proper tagging, keyword optimization, etc. you will see an improvement in your traffic. Just be sure to run analytics so that you can fix any pages that are not getting good click through or conversions. Be sure the information above the fold is relevant to your customers, and that you account for mobile users as well as other users.
