Research opens mobile opportunities

Research is key to a good mobile marketing campaign. Mobile marketing can help open the doors to a lot of potential customers, but only if you do your research, and thus get in front of the customers you want to reach, and give them a message they want to hear. The following are three of the biggest reasons you need to do your research when pursuing mobile opportunities.

1. Understanding the current mobile landscaping can help you uncover relevant consumer trends. The more research you do, the more you can see what is working for consumers, and most importantly what is not. You will be able to identify the current trends, so that you can utilize that knowledge in your mobile marketing campaign. In other words, you won't annoy or alienate your customers as you try to figure out this evolving market, instead you will use existing data to see what is working, and then take your cues from consumers.

2. What are your competitors doing to help avoid wasted dollars and increase their impact on the target audience? Although it is never fun to be a step behind someone, learning from their mistakes can help protect your resources, and improve your impact. Doing research into other's methods will allow you to learn from their mistakes and improve on what they did right. In other words, it helps you create your own road map, but with helpful hints and tips from those who have been there and done that.

3. Where are your strengths and weaknesses? It is a lot easier for you to identify your own strengths and weaknesses if you do the research to back it up. This means do a SWOT on your business, and then compare the data you collect against the market you are entering, the information on the mobile personas of your target audience, etc. and see if you can find a place where you see opportunities, and ask yourself what you could be doing better. Without research, how can you know where you are struggling, or where you competition is outshining you and stealing your market share?

Research is an important aspect in all kinds of marketing, but by doing your research, and spending time to get to know the target audience you will be engaging with mobile marketing channels, you open up market opportunities that you may have missed, or been oblivious to before. It does not take a lot of money, or even time, but you do have to dedicate some resources to understanding your market, your audience, and figuring out what kind of impression you want to make, clicks or branding? Etc. Research is part of the preparation required for a successful mobile marketing plan. You won't regret taking the time to scope your competition, get to know your audience, and determine your own strengths and weaknesses.
