• Not separating personal and business banking-Since many businesses begin as sole proprietorships many business owners feel that it is ok to use their personal banking to finance their business. This is never a good idea. If you have made this mistake you need to correct it right away since the longer it goes on the worse the consequences will be. The bottom line is that as your business grows its finances will get more complicated which means the record keeping for your business, will get more complicated as well. Not only does this make it harder to get keep track of business expenses and organize your finances for your business it can literally create a tax nightmare. If you have not separated your personal and business banking then you need to do so today. If you are setting up a new business then you need to meet with the business specialist at your bank and set up your business banking right from the start.
• Not taking the time to do market research-It is crucial that business owners understand that market research plays a huge role in the establishment of their business. In order to know who your target market is and where to find them, you will need to take the time and even spend the necessary money to do market research. Many business owners mistakenly assume that since they have a great product or service then they don’t need to do market research. The bottom line is that no matter how great your product or service is not everyone will want to buy it. However, there is a segment of the population that will be more inclined to buy your product or service. Those are the customers that you need to find through your market research. Once you have credible and complete market research you can then begin to design an effective marketing plan that will reach your target market.
• Not being dynamic with your marketing-Many business owners make the mistake of sticking with their marketing plan through thick and thin. However, it is important to understand that just because you invested your time, effort, and even money into a certain kind of marketing that does not guarantee that it is the right marketing plan for your business. If you find that your marketing is not paying off then you need to carefully consider what you should change. Under no circumstances should you ever discontinue marketing. Despite difficult financial times you will still need your customers to know where they can find and what you have to offer them. Instead you want to focus on making sure that your marketing is as effective as it can be. Do not allow yourself to get stuck in a rut when it comes to marketing. Savvy business owners understand that marketing is dynamic and they use it to respond to market changes that keep them successful for the long term.
