Time For Employee Evaluations

As a manager you have many different tasks to do on a daily basis. One of the hardest tasks you may face is meeting with your employees and doing some employee evaluations. An employee evaluation will require that you go over a number of things about the job duties and performance of that particular employee. The employee evaluations need to be done at least once a year in order to help you track the progress of the employee and for them to be able to see where they can improve and how well they are doing.

When should you conduct the evaluations? It depends on when it works well for you. It is smart to do them altogether or you could consider doing them on the anniversary date of the employee. You need to figure out your schedule and what will work well for you in order to conduct the employee evaluations in an effective manner.

The employee evaluations are going to give you a great advantage to creating a stronger company. You need to really focus on watching your employees and taking notes over the course of a year, not just a few weeks. Tracking their performance over a year will make it much easier on you to be able to evaluate their progress and it helps the employee to see how they have grown. They too want to be able to see how they have progressed and when you give them a year's worth of observance, it will make a bigger impact than just trying to put things together in the past month or less. Plan for the evaluations well ahead of time so you aren't just cramming in information that may or may not be worthwhile to the employees.

Since it does cost a lot of money to recruit and train new employees, you need to really focus your efforts on understanding how you can find a way to keep your employees. While you might not realize it, the employee evaluations can actually go a long way in helping you with employee retention. The employee evaluations will be able to help employees see problems that they need to address and will help you to preventing conflicts in the workplace and other issues.

What are some of the things that need to be considered in employee evaluations? They vary with each job since all the jobs are so vastly different. Some of the things that you need to look at include the following:
- Rating on performance standards
- Safety compliance
- Behavioral issues (how well do they work with their co-workers)
- Goal setting
- Accomplishing tasks
- Attendance concerns

Even if you think that you have an employee that you might consider "perfect" in just about every sense of the word, there is likely to be one or two things that will creep up. You need to really look at them and to see the issues at hand. Sometimes all you will need to do is make a couple suggestions on how they can work differently in order to make a big impact. It's the little things like this that can be a huge difference in helping an employee to improve.

Compliment the employee and when you are giving them advice on how to improve, make sure you are not doing it in a rude or hostile manner. You need to be respectful of the employee and really show them how much you do appreciate their hard work and dedication to the company. As people see that they are recognized, it will make it that much easier for them to feel as though they can work for the company for a long time.
