Choosing the right equipment to record phone calls

Having a telephone recorder can help ease your mind and provide you with a sense of security that many other devices can not give. Being able to record your phone calls, and refer back to them is something many find important. However, how do you choose the right equipment for recording these phone calls? The wrong equipment can take your sense of security and turn it on its head. The following are some things to consider when purchasing phone recorders:

You want to purchase a phone recorder that has no clicks, beeps, or noises that would give away its presence. Many recorders have a clicking noise when they start to record that could alert the phone user that the phone is tapped. So, if you want to get real use out of your phone recording equipment, you want to find equipment that automatically or manually records calls without anything to give it away. No clicks. No beeps. Nothing out of the ordinary.

Easy installation is essential to a good telephone call recorder. If you spend the money to buy one, and can't figure out how to get it to work, your money will be wasted. Instead, look for something simple. You want a telephone call recorder that can be plugged into any jack in the house and record all phone calls. You do not want something that requires a lot of software, heavy installation etc.

Quality sound should be a primary concern when choosing a telephone recorder. If you record a call, and the sound quality is so poor you can't make out what is being said, your money will have been ill spent. So, first and foremost when choosing a phone recorder, look for one that offers high quality of sound, no matter what end of the phone call the recorder is on.

Backup power is something to consider as well. Most phones will work even if the power is out. However, if your telephone call recorder requires power, and is plugged in, and youlose power, you lose the reason you purchased it in the first place, to be able to record phone calls. So, make sure that if you choose a telephone call recorder that it has a backup power source, is battery powered, or has some way of staying functional in a power outage.

Your next concern should be the recording itself. If your telephone recorder records calls in a digital format you can't use, it is a waste. You want to make sure that it comes with the software to convert files into usable audio formats such as MP3, or records directly into them in the first place. If you choose a cassette tape phone call recorder you only have one option, but if you choose a digital recorder you will want to know what format the files are recorded into, and how hard it will be to convert them to a more usable format.

Multi-phone use is something you want to consider when looking at phone recorders. If you have multiple phones or multiple lines in your house, you want to make sure you are going to be able to capture conversations, no matter what phone or line they are held on. Some phone recorders are multi-functional, and can be adapted to record cell phone conversations as well as ground lines.

Manual and automatic settings are also something that you may want to consider. Do you want your phone recorder to record every phone call that comes in on the line? Or, do you just want to be able to turn it on when you think a phone call should be recorded? You will want to consider whether it is manual or automatic when you buy it. Buying a manual phone recorder will do no good if your intent is to capture conversations that take place when you are away.

These are just some of the things to consider when choosing the right equipment to record phone calls.
