How to buy a new TV

manoncomputer30342716.jpgToday buying a new TV is much more complicated then it was just a few years ago. TV's have advanced from pretty much being the same components, except for size, to unique electronics that have some very advanced features. This can make picking out a TV a real endeavor. Savvy shoppers understand that they need to do significant research before strolling into the store or going online. If you know what you are looking for, you are much more likely to end with the TV that is right for you.

Here is what you need to know about how to buy a new TV-

  • Determine your price point-No matter how great your TV ends up being if you paid too much for it, you won't enjoy it as much. The good news is that there is no longer a reason to pay a big price, in order to get a great TV. You can find really wonderful TV's in all price points. This means that you can get what you want, without breaking the bank.

  • Decide what kind of TV you want. All TV's break down into 7 different categories. These categories are:

1. Direct-view-These are what is known as the standard model. The majority of TV's that you see online or in a store will fall under this category.
2. Projection-These are the large TV's that you see in "theater rooms". Most projection TV's range in size from 40-300 inches. The main benefit of this type of TV is that it produces a movie theater like picture and high quality sound. This is the TV you will need if you are setting up a home theater.
3. Flat panel-Users should understand that most flat panel TV's are made to hang on the wall. The main benefit of this type of TV is that it doesn't take up much space, but it is important to realize that you will pay a premium price, for this type of TV.
4. HDTV's-The main thing to know about this type of TV is that it uses a broadcasting signal that is digital. Again, the price point is higher; however, most people feel that they offer the best picture and sound, outside of a projection TV. Because of the universal broadcasting of HDTV you should already have the components that you need in order to receive the higher quality picture.
5. SDTV's-This type of TV is halfway between a HDTV and a conventional TV. Most of these TV's come with a video input component that enables the user to hood up to a digital TV receiver/decoder or set-top box.
6. Mini-TVs-These TV's have a screen that typically measures between 2-4 inches. They most often run on AA batteries or have a plug in adapter. You should keep in mind that while these TV's are completely portable, the screen can often wash out when exposed to direct sunlight.
7. TV/VCR combinations-The main advantage of this type of TV is that they come with a built in VCR. However, they are become less popular in the marketplace, due the advancement of technology. Many users choose this type of TV for kids, to watch (since many kids are avid movie watchers) only to find out that the VCR goes out a long time, before the TV does.

Shop around-It is important to take your time and shop around. Asking friends and family for their recommendation can also help. Check out online sites, and retail stores. Both types of retailers will often discount last year's model significantly. You shouldn't be afraid to buy a TV that is being discounted since many times the newer model has very little difference.
