How to hire the right accountant

Since you know you will be dealing with financial transactions for your company, you need to be able to take care of these or find someone with the know-how to take care of them for you. Hiring the right accountant is a great way to bring about the right results you need to manage your company and to also make sure you are in compliance with legal issues.

Financial transactions need to be dealt with each day. You need to have a software program or another thing that will record these transactions and organize them for you. Financial software is standard for just about every business out there. It makes your life much easier and it makes the job of your financial accountant much easier as well. Some of the programs allow for remote access so they can log into your system and come up with all of the information they need in just a few seconds. This will save you a lot of time as you don't need to schedule appointments to have them come to your facility and work on your books.

How do you hire the right accountant? Most of it comes down to the services you need the accountant to perform for your company. Most of the accountants out there will have some of the same standard skills like balancing your daily books, preparing statements, taxes, etc. This can reduce the work you need to put into your financial records. However as the business grows you may find that you have an entire department that is devoted strictly to accounting and you will need to hire multiple accountants to come out and work on your books.

Here are some of the skills you need to look for when you are hiring multiple accountants to help your organization:

  • Day-to-day records

  • Profit and loss statements

  • Managing multiple reports

  • Taxes and updating tax records to comply with new tax laws

  • Fixing irregularities

  • Establishing a procedure for your books

  • Reviewing company budgets

You often have one main accountant that is responsible for the overall department and procedures. The junior accountants are usually hired on by them and they will be in charge of some smaller tasks for the company like your payroll issues and helping with audit reports. Some of them may even sit in with the budget meeting in order to provide you with the right type of financial information you need to make correct decisions relating to marketing budgets and so on.

A skilled accountant must go to college and receive a degree in accounting. They also need to look into acquiring additional education and certifying themselves. A junior accountant is usually fresh out of college or they may be a person that you are training within the organization. It is still best to hire them out of college or away from other organizations where they have gained some experience and can bring that to your company.

Although an accountant will crunch numbers all day and they tend to work with spreadsheets, they need to come with good communication skills. They need to be able to put things into terms that you can understand so you can make the proper decisions pertaining to your other books. Look for a person that truly loves numbers and has a passion for accounting as they are commonly the best person for the job.

What will you pay an accountant? It depends on their skill and education but starting salaries often range around $60,000 and they will continue to climb upwards from there. Once a person acquires their CPA they can even demand more money from your company.
