Training New Managers

Occasionally, you will promote someone within your company or hire an outside party for a management role. If this person has no management experience, you are going to have to train them. This article will provide you with some helpful training tips for new managers within your company.

It is up to the individual manager to develop a style that fits their personality and uses the strategies that suits his or her abilities. These motivational strategies may include having a weekly meeting to discuss company progress. Another proven strategy is bringing people together outside of work on occasion. A company picnic or dinner is an outstanding way to do this.

Each manager must establish a rapport with their team. On the first day with a new team, the manager should articulate what is expected. When expectations are understood, the team will be able to respond to the manager's direction. The manager will provide the vision for what needs to be done throughout the course of the day. The manager must also articulate consequences. Consequences are either good, for when a goal is met, or bad, for when a goal is missed. Understanding that there are consequences for both good and bad performance will push employees to meet company goals.

Another important thing to consider is how to deal with resistance within the unit. You should be available to respond to your team's concerns. If they feel that there is something that can be changed to be better, you should hear your team out as a new manager. That being said, if you detect resistance out of tradition or stubbornness, it is important to put an end to this behavior rather quickly. Resistance to your managerial approach will often lead to problems in the future if it is not resolved within a timely manner.

Being a manager is rewarding. People look to you for a vision. Your vision will motivate a team to do better. There are some days when your vision will not be met as a manager. It is important to leave this at the door and focus on the opportunities in the next day. Setting goals will help your company succeed. Meeting goals will empower your team to do better. Setting and breaking benchmarks is what good management is all about. Your company will benefit greatly from effective management. Effective management is a learned skill.

The last piece of advice to include is that your employees will respond to the person that they see every day. If you are positive and upbeat, your team will perform in such a manner. If you challenge them to do better and learn new skills, they will set goals for themselves and be very proactive in their initiatives. The effective manager will have a team that manages themselves.
