Clean up a slow PC

There are so many different things that can happen to your computer that keeping it safe can be a big challenge. For many people a PC that runs slowly or one that tends to freeze and crash can be the largest concerns. Cleaning up a slow PC is one of the best options you have to extend the life of the computer and to reduce your annoyance when using the system. If your computer continues to freeze on the internet and you have a lot of issues with it, you do have some options that will allow you to speed it up and prevent you from needing to reboot every time it freezes.

Here are some things that you can do in order to speed up your computer if it is having issues:

  1. Check on the virtual memory space. If you are attempting to run a program or to download something with the internet you will likely get this virtual memory space message. This means that you need to clean up your system's virtual memory so you do have plenty of space for other programs to run. Clean out your cookies along with all the internet temporary files as this can provide you with some extra space to run the programs. What you can do is clean the virtual memory by going to "My computer" > "System Information" > "Settings (under the performance tab)" > "Advanced". By doing this you will be able to click on the virtual memory option and you have the ability to change it. This will allow you to see what is running and will let you clean up some space and have more available to your system.

  2. Clean up the C Drive by using an external hard drive. When you store too many programs and files on the C Drive, it does tend to slow down the system. The C drive is the main operating unit for the computer and when you start adding too many files to it, the drive is ineffective at performing. You have to clean the files often and then make sure that it didn't leave kinks in the memory of the computer or it can lead to problems like freezing. A registry clean program is one of the best ways to make sure the system is cleaned and that the computer is able to function properly. Moving files to an external hard drive is a great way to ensure that you will be able to have them for backup and it really can allow you to move them off the C drive and give the computer more room to work.

  3. Check on the start menu. When you initially start your computer, how long does it take for it to get up and running? Too many programs running off the start menu will also lead to a slow PC. You need to focus on resetting the start menu so that you don't end up having issues like this. All you need to do is go into the start menu and delete out the programs that you don't want to have running in the background all the time. You do need to be careful about the ones you delete as some of them are necessary for the system. Research the program before you remove it to make sure you aren't harming the computer in any way.

If you have cleaned up the cookies and everything and your internet is still slow, try a new search engine. Using Google Chrome over Mozilla firefox will increase the speed and performance of your internet and you will find that you are less likely to deal with outside attacks as well like you do with MSN.
