Satellite TV: Free satellite

Satellite TV dealers and retailers are all competing for the business of potential satellite TV customers. The result is a selection of attractive "free" promotions offered by these dealers in attempts to stay competitive. Satellite TV subscriptions can be expensive purchases, often costing as much as $800 a year. However, with the array of free satellite promotions now available, there is no reason a new satellite subscriber should have to pay full prices for equipment or services.

The Free Satellite Myth
Many potential satellite TV customers hear or read about promotions offering completely free satellite. However, these offers do not exist, and any satellite TV dealer advertising such a deal is most likely advertising a scam. Free satellite promotions from authorized satellite TV dealers offer attractive incentives of free equipment and/or upgrades, but each of these are available only with a monthly subscription.

Free Satellite Systems
A legitimate free satellite deal offered by several satellite TV dealers for first time customers is the free satellite system deal. These dealers offer equipment and services for free with the purchase of a satellite TV subscription. One very popular dealer offering this promotion is AllSat, an internet Dish Network dealer. AllSat's "Digital Home Advantage" free satellite incentive offers:

• Free satellite TV systems for up to 4 rooms, which means no equipment to purchase;
• Free upgrades to DVR (digital video recorder) equipment;
• Free standard installation and shipping;
• Free activation;
• 3 months of free premium movie channels;
• Free upgrades to HD equipment;
• Free Dish Network Home Protection Plan;
• Free gifts: an iPod Shuffle, DVR home theater system, or two airline tickets.

Although the activation fee is advertised as free, AllSat requires the $49.99 fee to be paid up front, and will then credit this amount to the subscriber with the first bill. This promotion is available for first time subscribers only, and requires a minimum $29.99 monthly subscription commitment of at least 18 months.

Rapid Satellite, an additional internet based satellite TV dealer offers a similar free satellite promotion for use with DirecTV subscriptions. Rapid Satellite "Free Direct DVR System" incentive offers:

• Free satellite systems for up to 4 rooms;


• Free standard installation.

While not as comprehensive as AllSat's free satellite offer, Rapid Satellite's promotion still allows first time subscribers who prefer DirecTV to save money.


Free Satellite from Major Providers
Although the two major American satellite TV providers-Dish Network and DirecTV-do not provide the bevy of attractive promotions authorized dealers do, they still do offer attractive specials and deals to potential subscribers.

Free Installation, Shipping, and/or Delivery
Both Dish Network and DirecTV offer free standard professional installation when a new customer subscribes to their services. This service includes:

• Installation of dish on the roof, side of home, balcony or other location;


• Required drilling;


• Connection of receiver to current TV, audio receiver, VCR and/or DVD player;


• A mini-lesson on system operation;


• Activation of service.

Professional installation not provided through a major satellite TV provider can cost as much as $200. Major providers also regularly include or waive the cost of shipping or delivering required equipment.

Free Upgrades and Rebates
Dish Network and DirecTV both frequently offer free upgrades from standard or basic satellite receiver equipment to more advanced equipment with better options. Normally, the cost of a better satellite receiver could be as much as $300. However, in addition to free upgrades, Dish Network and DirecTV offer attractive equipment rebates. Although the machines must be purchased initially, the provided rebates allow subscribers to recoup the cost of the equipment.
Additionally, both major satellite TV providers offer $100 and $200 cash-back incentives to first time subscribers.

With the array of free satellite promotions available, customers have no need to pay for satellite equipment or fully priced satellite.
