Should I purchase brand name or generic electronics?

When it comes to purchasing technology for your business, it's important to get quality materials that will last a long time and perform well. After all, you don't want your speaker phone to go out in the middle of an important conference call, or your fax machine to break down when you're expecting a contract to sign.

At the same time, however, no one wants to spend more money than is necessary on technology and gadgets, particularly when you are just starting your business and would rather invest more in marketing and developing the products.

Brand name or generic?
When it comes to technology, you can usually purchase a brand name or generic item. Brand names will almost always be more expensive (unless there is a sale going on) and in many cases, will probably be more reliable than generic versions. The following are some reasons to choose name brand over generic when it comes to technology:

  • Better materials. As a general rule, many name brand products will use better quality plastics, cording, and other materials that are crucial to the success and overall durability of your product.
  • Better guarantees. A more durable, well-known brand name technology product is more likely to stand behind their products with better and longer warrantees and overall guarantees.
  • Better quality. This can be the quality of sound if you are purchasing communication products such as telephones or speakers, or it can be anything in which the overall quality and clarity will be enhanced with better materials and technology.

It may seem difficult to justify spending the extra money, but there are a number of reasons you should choose brand name over generic, including:

  • Better company reputation. You don't want to have poor technology products, like faulty phones or machines that will not allow you to do your job or provide your services as well as possible. This will give you a reputation as cheap and may even turn off some prospective customers if they know it will be difficult to hear you, send faxes to you, etc.

  • More savings overall. Sometimes it makes better fiscal sense to spend more money on a quality item upfront instead of spending a little now and a lot later on repairs or replacements. While you may think you are saving money by purchasing a generic item, if you have to replace parts or even the whole item sooner than you would by purchasing a more expensive name brand item, you will end up paying more on technology that isn't as good as name brand.

Before making any purchases, it is still important to do your research. There may be a particular name brand that is not as good, or there may be generic brands that outperform name brands. So, it pays to be aware. In addition, keep your eyes open for sales or specials, particularly during holidays, when prices for name brand can be even lower than generic.

When it comes down to it, while some generic products are just as good as name brand, it's important to do your research when deciding whether to buy name brand or generic. If you have a business, its success (as well as reputation) is at stake, or if you just want to purchase a quality item, then it makes sense to spend a little more money to get a higher quality brand name item.
