The Pros and Cons of Digital Video Editing

There are many benefits to digital video editing. But just as there are many benefits to editing your own digital video, there are just as many head aches along the way. Just like with any hobby, there are pros and cons that need to be weighed in order to decide if it even worth the time and effort and especially the financial costs.

Digital video editing is fun and exciting when it is done with the enthusiasm and pizazz needed to be creative. Taking home videos and spicing them up with fancy transitions, memorable soundtracks, and custom titles can make the next family reunion look like an award winning documentary.

The benefit of editing digital video nowadays is the availability of the technology. Ask anyone who tried their hand at video editing even ten years ago and you will find that they couldn't even do a third of what can be done now. Computers have taken the gap between the ideas in people's minds and closed it to reality. Many independent film makers now shoot on digital video because the editing capabilities available now are so advanced it would be to their disadvantage not to. Even professional film makers who have large budgets transfer film to computers so it can be processed in digital video editing software.

Another benefit in digital video editing is the ability to enhance and improve light and sound issues that couldn't be avoided. Color correction can take an odd choice that the automatic settings of a digital video camera made and make them look more natural. Even sound that may have had terrible background noise can be improved with the ability to filter out certain wave lengths within the sound file. It is a great benefit to be able to fix picture and sound problems after they have happened because in the end, those little things make all the difference in the quality of the video. No matter how cool the soundtrack music is, or the transitions, or any of those things, no one will care because the actual video looks bad.

The problem with digital video editing is that it is time consuming. The times it takes to run the video onto the computer, to split into clips, edit, add effects, render, build DVD menus, then finally burn to DVD really can take a chunk out of your free time. That is why so many camera and software companies are trying to market easy editing systems so that it cuts down on all that time. The fact of the matter is that no matter how easy it may seem, it still takes a good amount of time to do it right.

Another problem is the money spent in buying the equipment necessary to edit video. From the computer, to the camera, to the editing software, DVD burner, DVDs, Video tapes, batteries, etc., the money begins to pile up and for some people, their enthusiasm goes down. It is extremely frustrating to end up with cheap equipment that performs poorly and in some cases, doesn't produce what is was advertised to. If you just remember that you get what you buy, then maybe it won't hurt so badly to put the money down.

Another problem with digital video editing for consumers is the memory required to do it. All of a sudden the huge hard drive that came with the computer is now a little thumb drive compared to the size of the digital video files being edited. Whenever working with digital media, especially video, remember that there can never be enough gigabytes. Memory is expensive and is the biggest problem people face when editing at home. Buying enough memory may become more expensive than the computer, the camera, and even the software needed to edit the video.

Whatever problems may arise in your own video editing experience, if you know why you are doing it and have a goal set in mind, then all of the money issues will become frivolous and you will be able to enjoy the capabilities of digital video editing.
